- Jefferson D. Ackor, Sr., 80, of Thomaston, died peacefully at his home on Monday Nov. 14, 2016, where he had been lovingly cared for by his wife of 53 years, Susan J. Oakes Ackor.
He was born June 12, 1936, in Plainfield, NJ, a son of Ephraim S. and Jeane (Parker) Ackor, Jr. He received his BA in Journalism and Master's Degree in Public Administration from UMO and was a US Navy veteran.
He began his career as the Bureau Chief for the Bangor Daily News in Machias. In 1966, he became Press Secretary to Maine's Governor, John H. Reed. He became a consultant for the Maine Dept. of Health and Welfare and Assistant Administrator of Augusta General Hospital. From '70-'75, he was Assoc. Exec. Dir. of Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and from '75 to '83, he was President of Medical Directions Corp., in Cushing. He was the CEO of the Camden Health Care Center and from '92 -'97 was the CEO for the Maine Veterans' Homes in Augusta. Prior to his retirement, he was responsible for an "Administrator In Training" program at Birch Grove Rehab and Living Center in Pittsfield for the Sandy River Group and served as Executive Director of Harbor Hill in Belfast.
In addition to being a licensed Nursing Home Administrator, he was a licensed real estate salesperson in North Carolina and was a Registered Master Maine Guide, 1966 to the present.
Jeff was an appointed member, Maine Dept. of Human Services Medicaid Advisory Comm., and was an elected board member of the Maine Health Care Association, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, member of the American Legion, Temple Masonic Lodge #25, Kora Temple Shrine and was a founding member and life member of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and a life member of the NRA.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, restoring old cars, was a NASCAR fan and often attended the Daytona 500 Race.
Jeff is loved by his wife, Susan J. Ackor of Thomaston; their children: Jefferson Ackor, Jr. and his wife, Clare of Seattle, WA.; James Ackor and his children Abigail and Brody of Cumberland; Adam Ackor and his wife Jeanne and their children Phoebe and Henry of Rockland and Erin and her husband, Mauricio Escamilla of Coral Gables, Florida; his sister, Terre Ackor Foldy and her husband, Robert of Wellsboro, PA; his step mother; Joan Ackor of Pawley's Island, SC; brother, John D. Ackor of Bolivia, NC; sister, Tarryn Ackor Hoover of Gladstone, NJ, three nieces and two nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday morning, Dec. 3, 2016, at 11 a.m. from Loon Lodge on the shores of Rangeley Lake. Following services, a comfort reception will be held at the Lodge. Remembrance gifts may be given to the DAV: TOGUS PO Box 3151 Augusta, Me. and tributes may be shared on his memorial wall at . Cremation care and memorial service arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., (Rtes 2 & 27) Farmington.
