Janette's Story

HAMPDEN - Janette Edgecomb Taylor, 95, died February 23, 2016 at a Bangor hospital. She was born in Stacyville on August 28, 1920, the daughter of Harry and Sarah "Sadie" (McClure) Edgecomb.

Janette was educated in Hampden schools and graduated as valedictorian from Hampden Academy in 1937. She entered the School of Nursing at the Eastern Maine General Hospital where she graduated with honors in 1941. Janette joined the Army Nurse Corps in February of 1942 and was stationed at Grenier Field where she met and later married Lt. Robert G. Taylor from South Bend, Indiana.

After the war, they lived in South Bend for 10 years and moved back to Hampden in 1956. She worked part-time at Eastern Maine General Hospital while raising her family. In 1962, she went to work for PROMIS Clinic for Doctors Cross, Bjorn, and Burger, where she worked for 29 years. Upon leaving PROMIS Clinic, she worked part-time for Dr. Burger until 1993 when she retired.

Though her vocation was nursing, which she thoroughly enjoyed, her avocation was music. She started playing the organ at age 14 and was an organist of record at the Hampden Highlands Methodist Church until she left for nursing school. After returning to Maine, she resumed playing the organ for the Hampden Highlands Church for 49 years. During most of this time she also directed the church choir and accompanied the Hampden Academy Chorus. For 25 years she was the accompanist for the Bangor Community Chorus. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and swimming.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Robert Edgecomb; and a sister, Ella Kelley. She is survived by her five children and their spouses; Patricia Ellis, Judith Dann and husband Michael, Robert Taylor and wife Charlene; Russell Taylor and wife Carol; and Sarah Taylor and husband Jeff Brown; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and by her niece, Connie Merchant. The family would like to thank the staff of the Maine Veterans Home for the wonderful care and compassion she received while there.
