EXETER - James G. Downing, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully at his home on November 8, 2015. He was born July 6, 1935 in Corinth, a son of Lyall and Clara (Cyr) Downing, Sr.
James owned and operated the family potato farm, working with his father in his early teens, and retiring in 1997. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed his vegetable garden, the New England Patriots, and sitting on his deck listening to music with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia (Groleau) Downing of Exeter; 2 daughters, Kathy and husband Brent Day of Dexter, Judy Pullen and companion Scott Barden of Lisbon Falls; a son James Downing, Jr. and wife Lisa of Exeter; 5 sisters, Zelma Issler and Dolores Landry, both of Wrentham, MA, Rita Bean of Corinth, Barbara Grimes of N. Attleboro, MA, and Nancy Cyr of Greenville; 8 grandchildren, Eric Day, Katie Day, Amanda Pullen, Mark Pullen, Nicole McGovern, Zachary Nason, Ashley Downing and Jennifer Downing; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 4 brothers, Alton, Lyall, Jr., Robert and Maynard Downing, and 2 sisters, Althea Gauthier and Betty Buxton.
Graveside services will be held 11 A. M. Saturday, November 14th at the Vickery Cemetery, Exeter. Friends and family are invited to the family farm for a time of remembrance following the services.
