Milford, MA - J. Rosson Overcash, Sr. 89, formally of Lincolnville, ME, and Brookline, MA, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at Milford Center, Milford, MA, on April, 14, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Louise B. Overcash, his children John R. Overcash, Jr., spouse Patricia, of Ayer, MA, and Martha Overcash of St. Louis, MO, his three grandchildren, Shannon K. Overcash, Branden K. Overcash and Libby Overcash and his two great-grandchildren, Dominic and Madeline Valverde. He was predeceased by his brother Whitson M. Overcash, Jr., of Paris, France.
Ross was born in Springfield, Tennessee. His parents were both in the field of education and he followed in their footsteps. Ross attended Harvard University graduating in 1949 and continued on to Harvard Graduate School. While at Harvard he was a member of the marching band where he played the clarinet. Ross continued his association with band for many years as a post graduate. After graduating from Harvard University, he taught at the college level at various schools. He began his career at Mitchell College, in Connecticut, and continued at Northeastern University where he began the Earth Science Department. He finished his long teaching career at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston.
Ross was active in civic affairs in the town of Brookline where he and Mary Lou raised their family. He was a scout leader with Troop 6 and a town selectman for many years. He was also active in his church, All Saints Episcopal in Brookline.
When he retired, he and Mary Lou sold their home in Brookline and moved to Lincolnville, Maine, to begin a second career as the owners of The Red House bed and breakfast. He enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and beautiful flowers. For many years, he played in the Lincolnville Town Band, gave astronomy talks at Camden Hills State Park, and was active with the local Boy Scouts as well as town affairs. Ross was a member of Rotary International.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd., Ayer, MA 01432. In lieu of flowers the family asks for contributions to be made in his name to the Camden Public Library, 55 Main Street, Camden, Maine 04843. Interment will be later in the spring, in Maine, at the convenience of the family.
