DOVER-FOXCROFT - Irene T. Smith, 96, wife of the late Lucien E. Sawyer, who died in 1969, and wife of the late Roland C. Smith, who died in 2008, passed away March 11, 2014, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. She was born March 29, 1917, in Winter Harbor, the daughter of Milton W. and Vera A. (Rolfe) Torrey.
For many years Irene worked in the Dry Good Store in Milo. After she married Roland she worked in his sporting goods store until they retired in 1982. They spent a few winters in Florida. After building their house in Atkinson, they decided to stay there. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed getting meals for everyone.
Irene was predeceased by her parents; her two husbands, Lucien and Roland; her son, Edward Sawyer; her son-in-law, Donald H. Smith; her two sisters and their husbands, Marie and Allison Workman, and Eleanor and Everett Stewart.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy L. Smith of Atkinson; her daughter-in-law, Carol Jean Sawyer of Milo; several grandchildren, and great grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Elsie.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. March 29, at United Baptist Church, Milo, with Pastor Phil McGlauflin officiating, with a time of fellowship and refreshment after the service.
