BAR HARBOR - Ira Somerville Fisk, 98, passed away November 26, 2014 in his home at Birch Bay Village. He was born November 4, 1916 in North Hoosick, NY, to Harriet Somerville and Ira Thomas Fisk.
Ira graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and attended RPI and Troy Business College. He was a machinist/draftsman and manager at HE Ignition Parts in Cambridge, NY until his retirement in 1982. In 1947, he helped found the North Hoosick Volunteer Fire Department and faithfully responded to calls until age 70. He was a past master of the Hoosick Falls Masonic Lodge and a member of the Catamont Gadabouts square dancing club in Bennington, VT. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church where he served in various capacities. He also served on Hoosick Falls Central School Board of Education for many years. In 1942, he married Elva Brenenstuhl who predeceased him in 2008. They spent his retirement years traveling extensively, hiking, cross country skiing, foraging for wild edibles, gardening, and playing Mahjong with friends. Until moving to Bar Harbor in July 2013, he was a lifelong resident of North Hoosick.
He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Fisk, of Bar Harbor; a son I. Theodore Fisk and wife Rose of Naperville, IL.;four grandsons, Chip Applegate and wife Jill of Vail, AZ, Bryan Applegate and wife Mae of Vinalhaven, Timothy Applegate and wife Tara of Newport, and Darren Applegate and wife Erica of Auburn; five great-grandchildren and a sixth to be born in June.
There will be a family memorial at a later time, when he joins Elva on Little Moose Island, Schoodic Penninsula, ME.
