Howard served in the Coast Guard during World War II and then moved with his family to Ellsworth, where he opened and operated Harmon's Upholstery Shop, at his home on Elm Street. He sold this business to his son and went to live and worked at Narraguagus Estates in Milbridge until his retirement. It was there he met his second wife, Doris. They lived for many years in Harrington until her death in 1994. Howard married Jeanette Morse of Cherryfield in 1995. She predeceased him in 2016. Howard enjoyed entertaining, meeting new people, hard work, cooking, sharing stories and spending time at his camp on Tunk Lake. During his earlier years, Howard was a member of Anah Shrine, Ellsworth Rotary Club, and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cherryfield.
Howard is survived by his sons, Monty and wife, Helen, Duane and wife, Phyllis; daughter, Zella and husband, Lenny; stepchildren, Charles Mason and wife, Gloria, and Mona and husband, Ed Skoog; nine grandchildren and stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
