LUCERNE-IN-MAINE - Hilfred K. Bailey, 96, of Lucerne-in-Maine, passed away peacefully in Antony, Fla., on June 8, 2015. He was born on Jan. 31, 1919, at St. Stephen N.B. Hospital, to Leslie T. and Velma Lyon Bailey of Princeton.
He attended Longfellow, Mary Snow and Bangor High School, class of 1937. He was a member of the R.O.T.C. and rifle clubs, picking up the nickname "Buckshot Bailey. In 1936 his sister, Hilda, bought him his first guitar for $12.50, a Silverstone Sears & Roebuck. Hillie was still playing it last fall before going to live with his grandson, Bret, in Florida. He worked at Bacon Printing, BDN, White and Hayes Funeral Home, and Haynes and Chalmers. Serving in the Army in 1942, he then worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Co. in Hartford, Conn. Hillie married Joann Harbach in 1939 and had one daughter, Barbara. In 1958 he married Elizabeth Jonson and built the "Stage Stop." He called for many clubs, including the Country Cousins, Bells and Buoys, Heart of Maine Squares, Square Riggers, and in Lincoln. He also gave lessons for the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the Lincoln area. With best friends, Garnet and Kay Banks of Nova Scotia, Hillie and Elizabeth initiated the International Square Dance Exchange. Polly Harrison became his wife in 1999 and now resides at Ross Manor. He was also a member of the Rising Virtue Lodge #10 and Anah Temple Shrine.
Hillie was predeceased by sister, Hilda Prince and husband, Raymond; grandson, Allan Cyr; and great-granddaughter, Bailey Eryn Cyr. Surviving family members include wife, Pauline and her three children, Sheila, Katlyn and Steve; daughter, Barbara and husband, Ashley Coombs of Russell Hill Road, Bucksport; daughter, Karen, grandson, Billy and great-grandaughter, Raegan Lander; grandson, Bret Cyr and three daughters, Megan, Laura and Jessica of Anthony, Fla.; niece, Christine Gilfillan and husband, William, and daughter, Kathleen Connelly of Hampden; and Elizabeth's three sons, Allan, Phillip and Stanley Johnson and their families.
A private graveside will be held followed by a reception 1 p.m. Friday, June 19, at Dedham Congregational Church, 512 Upper Dedham Road, Dedham, ME 04429. Donations in Hillie's memory may be made to the church.
