- Hilda Ayotte Bosse, 91, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2017, in Presque Isle. She was born in St. Agatha on June 5, 1925, the daughter of Josephel and Marie (Albert) Ayotte. Hilda was the youngest of 10 children. She married the love of her life, Lawrence, in 1942, and together they raised nine children. They were married in St. Agatha and celebrated 62 years of marriage until his death in 2005.
In 1963, Lawrence and Hilda purchased a driving range on the Presque Isle Road in Caribou. Together they turned it into the family-operated Funland Amusement Park, a wonderful place where families could spend hours of enjoyment. During those years, in the winter months, she worked at J.J. Newberry. After retiring from Funland, she and Lawrence enjoyed many years in Florida during the winter months and summers in their hometown of St. Agatha. During those years, no matter which home they were living in, most weekend nights were spent playing cards with friends and relatives and serving them her delicious homemade meals and desserts.
Hilda was totally committed to her husband and children. She worked tirelessly with Lawrence on the refurbishing of many homes for resale. Hilda cleaned all of the hundreds of fish Lawrence caught, kept a beautifully clean home, was a wonderful cook and made the best ployes in the county. Her children patiently stood in line to grab the next one off the griddle. Most days during potato harvest, she would have a delicious hot breakfast waiting for all nine children before they headed out to the field and have a well-packed lunch with all their favorites ready for them. A delicious supper would be ready for them when they returned in the evening.
She never stopped her dedication to her children when all left the nest. She continued to support all nine through college, spent many hours babysitting her grandchildren, and gave much encouragement through any hardships they might experience.
Hilda volunteered many hours of care to the residents of the St. Joseph Nursing Home in Frenchville and in the gift shop of the St. Agatha Catholic Church, for which she was honored with the WAGM TV ALL STAR award in 1997.
After Lawrence passed, Hilda moved to Leisure Gardens in Presque Isle, where she enjoyed many of their planned activities especially the mass on Monday and the occasional Bingo game. She was a voracious reader, a great storyteller, and loved playing many hours of Rummikub with Nancy. She was a member of Catholic Golden Age and the Ladies of St. Anne, She was extremely devoted to her catholic faith.
Hilda is survived by 33 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, her brother Alcide Ayotte of Plainville, Connecticut, three daughters, Cecile Dechaine of Terryville, Connecticut, Jacqueline Devoe of Holden, Nancy and her husband, Jim Chandler of Presque Isle; five sons, Jim of Presque Isle, Larry and his wife Linda of Marshfield, Phil and his wife Denise of Caribou, Ron of Caribou, and Michael and his wife Peggy of Fort Fairfield and several nieces and nephews.
