BOLTON, MA, AND THORNDIKE - Herbert H. Schartner, 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Florida.
He is survived by his companion Linette Roach-Davis of Thorndike, ME; his loving children and their spouses, David H. Schartner and Jacqueline of Lancaster, MA, Susan S. Ducey and Robert of The Woodlands, TX, and William J. Schartner and Dawn of Lancaster, MA; grandchildren, Kathleen Johnston and
husband, Kyle, Erin Morrill and husband, Scott, Kristen Ducey, Erik Ducey, Daniel, Ryan, Rory, and Reid Schartner; and great-grandson, Ian Johnston. He leaves two sisters, Alice Lefebvre and husband, Eugene, of Spring Hill, FL, and Lois Grala of
Rindge, NH; sister-in-law, Sandra Schartner of Bolton, MA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen Schartner; and brother, Robert Schartner.
Herb was born in Clinton, MA, to the late Henry and Lillian (White) Schartner. He was raised in Bolton, attended local
schools and was a graduate of the Hudson High School, Class of 1954. Prior to his primary career in farming, Herb held employment with ER Sullivan Co., William Reisner Corp. and Cott Distributorship. He worked throughout his lifetime with his family at Schartner Farm in Bolton and later established
Schartner Farms in Thorndike, Maine, which he successfully owned and operated for more than 30 years. Mr. Schartner was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Waterville, Maine, and held membership with the Maine Farm Bureau and Clinton Turn Verein. He enjoyed many years of coaching youth baseball and most cherished time spent in the company of his loving family.
Calling hours will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015, in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, MA. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Ev. Trinity Lutheran Church, 117 Chace St., Clinton, MA, with burial at a later date in Eastwood Cemetery, Lancaster, MA.
