Henry's Story

PALM COAST - SLAGER, HENRY JOSEPH - Hank Slager, 88, went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2014 in Palm Coast, Florida. Hank was born January 29, 1926 in Old Town, ME to Joseph and Georgianna Slager. He served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Marines from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific theater, where he participated in the invasion of Okinawa, and where he remained until the end of the war. In 1949 he married his childhood sweetheart, Bonnie at the "Little Church Around the Corner", in New York City. Hank retired in 1985 after 38 years of service with Eastern Airlines. At the end of his career he was the director of In-Flight Services based in Atlanta, GA, Eastern's major base. Sometime later, Hank was honored when he was elected to the Eastern Airlines "Hall of Fame". Hank and Bonnie moved to Palm Coast in 1986 where he became active in the community. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, Palm Coast Yacht Club and the Matanzas River Yacht Club, where he was active in his younger years. He also served as a volunteer with Florida Health Care for many years. He found enjoyment in golf, boating, fishing, and traveling throughout the world. His may trips included Greece, the European continent, India, Mexico, Hawaii, New Zealand, and the Caribbean and the family took many cruises. Hank especially enjoyed his summers on his beloved coast of Maine. Hank will be remembered for his integrity, loving kindness and quiet dignity. His mother, father, brother and 3 sisters predeceased him. Hank is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Bonnie; sister Margret; children, Brian and Julie; 2 grandchildren, Kimberly and Michael; and 2 great grandchildren, Cadence and, Klayton. There will be a memorial service for him on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Marine Corps League Detachment #876, P.O.
