Henry's Story

MACHIAS - Henry A. Dircksen, 95, formerly of Eddington, died March 16, 2016, at the Woodlands Assisted Living in Brewer, ME.

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 40 years, Elsie Larrabee Dircksen; his sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Alan Watts of Machias; and his parents, Johannes and Etta (Fish) Dircksen of Machias.

He is survived by his family, John and Suzanne Dircksen of Galloway, New Jersey, Rita and Raymond O'Day of Brewer, David and Brenda Dircksen of South Berwick, Gilbert "Gene" and Stephanie Larrabee of Machias, Dawne and Louis Violette of Eustis, Florida; grandchildren, Carol and Edward Arey of Bangor, Steven O'Day of Spring, Texas, Michael and Christina Larrabee of Bradley, Matthew and Rachel Larrabee of Hampden, Michelle Violette of Eustis, Florida, Richard and Jennifer Violette of Epping, NH; great-grandchildren, Mariah, Colleen, Katherine, Jordyn and Gavin.

He is survived by cousins and friends, Barbara Fish of Jonesboro, Madeline Sweet of Bucksport, Eva Simard of Nashua, NH, Linda and Jim Varney of Jonesboro, Gynell and Nathan Schoppee of Holden.

Henry was a graduate of the Maine School of Commerce before entering the USMC in World War II. He was assigned to the Fifth Marine Division that fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima. He returned to Machias and worked at the Eastern Trust and Banking Company/Northeast Banking, retiring as branch manager in 1983. He served on the board at the Machias Savings Bank and Down East Community Hospital. He was a member of the Machias Rotary, American Legion, University of Maine Extension and the Marine Corps League in Bangor.

A memorial graveside service will be held in the spring at Longfellow Cemetery in Machias. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the charity of your choice. Online condolences may be shared at www.bragdonkelley.com.
