Helena's Story

AUGUSTA - Helena Margaret (Gagne) Law, 95, died suddenly May 16, with her son Mark by her side, fulfilling her wish to "go to sleep and not wake up" when her time to leave this earth arrived. She was of sound mind making plans for her 96th birthday party with the family the following week. She played cards the night before her death and talked to her sister just a few hours before she passed.

She was born May 24, 1919 in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Lucien and Florence Gagne. She was a retired school teacher having taught elementary education for 31 years - starting her teaching career in a one-room school in Augusta, Maine and then teaching kindergarten for many years in Washburn. In retirement, she served as a very active volunteer at Maine General Hospital in Augusta for 25 years. Her greatest loves were her husband and children. To her children she left a legacy for living life always maintaining a positive attitude. At all times, the encouraging teacher, she would advise them "if you work hard, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to accomplish."

She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years Edward Wesley Law, her daughter Margaret 'Peetie' Charette and her sisters Violet Chaplin and Marine Veilleux. She is survived by her sister Beulah Smith of Lewiston; sister-in law Eloise Law of Plattsburg, NY; son Mark A. Law and his wife Roxann of Westbrook; daughter Amy (Law) Charette and her husband Eugene of Phoenix, AZ; son-in law Russell D. Charette and his partner Deanne Lavallee of Gardiner, Maine; her grandchildren, Amy Jean Charette, Joseph Charette and his wife Kate, Kate Law, Emily Charette, Becky Law; her first great-grandchild, Emma Jane Charette and six nieces and nephews - Harry "Butch" Chaplin, Judy Chaplin Weir, Gary Veilleux, Marine Veilleux Shea, George Veilleux, and Kelly Smith Rich. In addition, Helena had many folks - staff and residents - at Gray Birch Residential Care in Augusta, whom she considered family. We would like to thank the many people there over the years for helping to make it her "home."

A funeral mass will be held St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gardiner on May 26th at 11am. Funeral services were provided by Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, Maine. Burial will take place in the family lot, Lakeview Cemetery, Union. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Gray Birch Activities; 37 Gray Birch Drive, Augusta, ME 04330 to host Bingo prizes for the residents. To Helena's delight, she won many Bingo games in her 15 years living there after her stroke and she would consider it a privilege to have your gifts support others having fun playing!
