MILLINOCKET - Helen V. Blum, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at dawn May 1, 2014, at Millinocket Regional Hospital in Millinocket, her town of residence for the past 8-plus years. She was born Helen Victoria Snyder on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918, in Pottsville, PA, the fifth of six children of Barney and Rose (Lewis) Snyder.
She graduated from Pottsville High School and worked in the candy department of a department store before marrying Lester Blum, of Allentown, PA, on July 3, 1947. They moved to Reading, PA, where she devoted herself to her family and volunteer organizations such as Sisterhood and Hadassah. She often meticulously organized and elaborately decorated for organizational luncheons and dinners. After their son completed school, she worked in retail sales until they returned to Allentown in 1981. There at the Bnai Brith Apartments she resumed her volunteer role. She moved to Maine in 2005 to be closer to family. She was the oldest and longest residing resident of Stearns Assisted Living in Millinocket.
Surviving are her son Ronald Blum MD and his wife, Mary Lou Evitts, of Patten; and grandchildren, Shemariah Blum-Evitts and her husband, Robert Friedman; and Helen's beloved great-grandchild, Matanya Rose Friedman of South Deerfield, MA, Jedediah Blum-Evitts, of Haines, AK, Elisha Blum-Evitts of Island Falls and Lyron Blum-Evitts of Washington, D.C.; and sisters-in-law, Doris Blum of Marina Del Ray, CA, Zelda Freedman of Redwood Valley, CA, and Helen Snyder of Louisville, KY; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester in 1988; as well as her parents and all her siblings.
The family extends special gratitude to the staff of Stearns Assisted Living, including those women who offered one-on-one care to Helen in recent weeks and the Director, Glynn McLaughlin, as well as the staff and nurses of Millinocket Regional Hospital, including Drs. Jenkins and Herbert.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, at Congregation Agudas Achim Cemetery, Allentown, PA.
