Hazen's Story

Text size

Houlton - Hazen E. Gartley, 99, died peacefully February 21, 2017. He was born August 12th, 1917, in Watson Settlement, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Ernest and Nettie (Blackmore) Gartley.
Hazen and his identical twin brother, Henry, were the 5th and 6th arrivals of 7 children on the family farm. Hazen attended the Watson Settlement School until 8th grade when he and Henry left school to work on the farm. At age 17, Hazen and Henry went to work in the woods for a dollar a day - Hazen remembered it as hard work but with good pie at the end of the day! At the age of 24, Hazen beat his brother to the sign-up office to enlist in the Army and fight in World War II. Hazen fought in Germany, France, Belgium, and England, and met his British bride, Irene, in London during those years. After the war they returned to Canada and set up housekeeping. Hazen worked for the Province of New Brunswick as a grader operator until they later emigrated to Houlton and became United States citizens. Hazen and Irene raised their three children in Houlton and Hazen worked for Donald McKay Construction for many years. During those years, he participated in the construction of Loring Air Force Base. When Don McKay retired, Hazen was fortunate to go to work as a mechanic for the B & A Railroad, retiring in 1985. For many years, Hazen had a small shop next to his house where he tinkered on all kinds of equipment for his friends and neighbors, enjoying their company and catching up on all the local news. In Hazen's later years, well into his 90's, he looked forward to and enjoyed the company of the gang at Tim Horton's on a daily basis.
Hazen is survived by his son, Henry and his wife Marion and their two children, Elizabeth and Matthew; his daughter, Valerie Gove and her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Jesse Healy; and daughter Lois Brewer and her three children, Sean Donovan and sons, Joseph and Jack Hazen, Jeffrey Pangburn and wife, Nora and sons, Jacob, Evan, and Brian and Rebecca Langille and sons, Ian and Thomas. Hazen was predeceased by his wife and mother of his three children, Irene Clinkard, (married 40 years); his identical twin brother, Henry (taken tragically in his thirties); sisters, Clara Crawford, Alice Kirsch, Rachel Stewart, Jennie Gartley and Audrey Bell. Hazen was also predeceased by his second wife, Janice Tower.
The family would like to give a special thank you to all of the staff at Gardiner Nursing that treated Hazen with kindness and respect during his stay there.
Friends may call 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, February 24th, 2017, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water Street, Houlton, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. with the Rev.
