Harriet's Story

CORINTH - Harriet Olive McKenzie, 91, died Feb. 15, 2016, at a Bangor health center. She was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Howland, the daughter of Ernest and Edna (Mills) Veino  Amero.

She attended Corinth and Charleston schools, then moved to Howland and resided with her great uncle while being employed at Atlas Plywood Company for many years. Later she moved to CT and married Merle McKenzie. There her employment was with Bayless Diaper Service. After her husband's death, a move was made back to Corinth. The enjoyment of hunting deer and partridge was in her younger years.  She loved animals, yard sales and flea markets. The collection of pig memorabilia was her favorite hobby. Her home was always warm and inviting.

She is survived by a son, Bruce McKenzie; and grandson, Jarrod of FL; a brother, Gerald Veino of Illinois; a half sister, Vivian Starbird and her husband, Ernest, of Carmel; several nieces and nephews, as well as close friends. She was predeceased by a brother, George Veino of Michigan;  half sisters, Reta (Amero) Lougee and husband, Rodney, of Exeter, Joyce (Amero) Peppinger of Montana and Shirley (Amero) Floyd of New Jersey; stepsisters, Thelma Mitchell of CA and Helen Coburn of MO; and sister-in-law, Mary Veino of IL. The family wishes to thank Eastside Center for Health and Rehab, as well as Beacon Hospice for their support and loving care of Harriet.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at a time to be announced. Donations in her memory may be made to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are in care of the Thompson Funeral Home, 17 Hudson Road, Corinth.
