ELLSWORTH - Tug passed peacefully on the morning on March 19, 2016 with his family by his side. Tug was born to Grace (Moran) and Harold L. White, Sr. in New Limerick.
He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. (Flatbush) until they moved back to Ellsworth in 1948. A graduate of Ellsworth High School, Tug was a three sport athlete and a member of Ellsworth's first State Championship basketball team in 1953. After high school he attended Maine Central Institute Prep School and then enlisted in the United State Air Force as a personnelist. He was stationed overseas in England, separating after four years and returning to Maine to attend the University of Maine in Orono. He married Anne Marie Allen in 1960 and was married for 32 years.
He earned his bachelor's degree in education and taught in the Bar Harbor (where he also coached football) and Ellsworth school systems. After teaching, he worked as a child protection worker for the Department of Human Services, and then as a social worker for Downeast Health Services, but returned to education as the assistant director of special education for Hancock County. Active in his community, he also spent time on the School Board for both Ellsworth School Systems and the RSU 24 board.
He spent many years as the voice of high school basketball and football for Hancock County and as a broadcaster for WDEA radio; additionally, he spent time as a sports broadcaster for WVII TV in Bangor. Tug loved all sports and followed Ellsworth High School sports and the Boston Red Sox closely. He spent time as the commissioner of Ellsworth Little League and coached both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was instrumental in bringing the sport of football back to Ellsworth after decades of being gone. He loved spending time with friends fishing and golfing, and even became an accomplished bridge player.
He is survived by his brother, Kent White and his wife, Margaret of Connecticut; his children, Brian White of Ellsworth, Russell White and his wife Christina of Ellsworth, David (Randy) White of Ellsworth, and Jennifer Alexander and her husband Brett of Ellsworth. He is also survived by their mother, Anne of Bangor. He was the proud grandfather of Cristina, Lindsay and Abigail White of New Hampshire, Declan and Ryan White of Ellsworth and Wyatt and Quinn Alexander of Ellsworth, along with many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, David.
The family would like to extend special thanks to his caregiver Linda Anderson, One Step Home Care, Hospice of Hancock County and the staff of Seaport Village.
It was Tug's wish that there be no funeral services and the family is planning a celebration of life at Big Cats Catering on American Way in Trenton on March 26, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers you make donations to the Ellsworth Football League, in care of Duane Crawford, at First National Bank, PO Box 1099, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
