Harold's Story

Text size

Dexter - Our Heavenly Father has taken His servant, Rev. Harold D. Wheeler, to Heaven on April 1, 2017. Harold was the third child of Deroy and Eunice Wheeler, born in Auburn, Maine, September 29, 1921.
Harold graduated from Bates College and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (now Palmer Seminary). Following graduation he came to Dexter to reopen the First Free Baptist Church (now New Hope Baptist Church) as it had been closed for eight years. He later pastored four other churches, in Brunswick, ME, Ridgefield, CT, Old Town, ME, and Merrimack, NH. After his retirement in June 1986, he continued as an interim pastor in many churches throughout Maine. Harold was a pastor who loved his "flock" and was always reaching out to anyone who needed to come to the Lord.
Harold enjoyed turning the 1891 home they moved into in June 1986 into a loving home, and even added an addition to make the home more comfortable.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marylou Avis (Bailey) Wheeler of Dexter; two sons, Dr. David Wheeler and his wife, Sally of Portland, OR, and Daniel Wheeler and his wife, Ann Marie of Eddington; three grandchildren, Daniel Aaron Wheeler and his wife Kim, Nicole Leigh Wheeler; and Eli Joseph Wheeler.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2017, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main St., in Dexter. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, April 7, 2017, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Dexter, with Pastor Russell Bailey officiating. Spring burial will be held in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in his memory be sent to New Hope Baptist Church.
