BANGOR - Harold C. Gallagher, Jr., 85, died, on April 12, 2015, at The Maine Veteran's Home in Bangor, Maine. This has been his home for the past 18 months since he lost his wife of 62 years, Shirley. Harold was born May 02, 1929, in Bangor, the son of Harold C. Gallagher and Lenora M (Fournier) Gallagher.
Harold graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1947, and worked as a driver for Steve's Dry Cleaning and at his father's store. Harold was drafted into the Army in Jan of 1951 and did his basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. He and Shirley were married there and honeymooned in Gatlinburg, TN. After going to Camp Atterbury, IN (with Shirley) for medic training he was deployed to Pusan, South Korea. His unit was later moved to Osaka, Japan. He returned home in Jan of 1953 for discharge. Harold drove for Greyhound Bus Lines before joining the Bangor Fire Department in 1957. Harold worked at Central and then Station 6 (Center St) and drove the ladder truck. After 20 years of service, he retired and then drove the Bangor City Bus for several years. People may also remember Harold during his fire department years for washing windows, mowing lawns and painting homes as a side job. He was a member of the American Legion and was an avid sports fan. He loved his New York Giants football and Boston Red Sox baseball teams. Harold's family has many fond memories of summers spent at camp at Philips Lake.
Harold is survived by daughters, Patricia Gallagher Farley and her husband, Jesse, of Pearland, Texas, and Donna Babcock and her husband, Tim, of Glenburn; sons, David Gallagher, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Charles Gallagher, of Bangor; grandchildren, Kristen Farley, Doug Welch, Matt Welch, Josh Gallagher; special grandchildren, Justin Carter and Travis Bickford; great-grandchildren, Rylee Welch and Hattie Welch; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his wife, Shirley Thibodeau Gallagher, his sister, Charlene Gallagher who died in a tragic car accident in August 1954, and his life-long friend, Walter (Mickey) Crawford.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at Brookings Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at The Parish Hall of St. Mary's Catholic Church, following Committal Prayers.
