Harold's Story

HOLDEN - Harold was a beloved family man, a treasured friend, a United States WWII Veteran, and most importantly, a devout Christian. He passed away at the Maine Veterans' Home on Monday, September 15, 2014. Harold was born in Sabattus, Maine, on January 26, 1924, the son of George and Mildred Dutille.

He attended Sabattus schools, served in the United States Navy, and then attended four years of college at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. He then worked for Combined Insurance Agency as a salesman and eventually in Bangor as district manager. He was a faithful member at Twin City Baptist Church in Brewer since its founding. Harold served in the United States Navy aboard the LST-693 during World War II. He took part in five invasions, including the Philippines and Okinawa. His ship LST-693 participated in the invasion of Leyte (October-November 1944), the invasion of Mindoro (December 1944), the landings at Subic Bay (January 1945), and the invasion of Okinawa (April 1945). He was awarded the American Campaign medal, the Okinawa Occupation Service medal, the Asiatic and Pacific Campaign medals, the World War II medal, the Liberation of the Philippines medal, the Good Conduct Medal and five battle stars.

Harold was predeceased by his father, George Dutille Sr. and Mildred (Burgess) Dutille; and six of his siblings, Pearl Knight, Doris Lapierre, Violet Longtin, Ruth White, George Dutille Jr. and Kathleen Faye Cosgrove. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Arlene Dutille of Holden; his loving sister, Marion Yerardi of New Port Richey, Fla.; and his children, the Rev. H. Kenneth Dutille Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Montville, George "Ric" Dutille of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Deborah and husband, James Phinney, of Brewer. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Timothy Dutille and wife, Julie, of Rockport, David Dutille and wife, Holly, of Gardiner, Melissa (Dutille) Smith and husband, James, of the United States Navy stationed at El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain, Crystal (Dutille) Morrison and husband, Shawn, of Bucksport, Joseph Dutille of Bangor, Ashley Dutille of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lisa (Phinney) Gordon and husband, Thomas, of Newport and Justin Phinney of Brewer. He will be missed by his great-grandchildren, Alexander Super, Caleb and Isaac Dutille, Ashlyn Dutille, Andrew and Cody Gordon, Devon Gardner, Xavier and Cooper Morrison, Jaden Smith and Dominick Jones. His many nieces and nephews will also remember him fondly. He will be forever missed by all his family and friends who will always remember his welcoming smile, his war stories, his fun sense of humor and his love for God. We love you and miss you!

Please join the family on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 11 a.m. for a graveside service at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Sabattus, followed by food, fellowship and memories at Sabattus Community Baptist Church.
