Harold's Story

HARRINGTON - Born in the United Methodist parsonage on Chebeague Island 94 years ago on Nov. 20, 1920, John left for his heavenly home January 10, 2015. John was the son of the Revs. Earl and Erma Bigelow.

After graduating from Harrington High School in 1939 he held various jobs, joining the Navy after working as a civilian in Pearl Harbor after the WWII bombing and eventually moving back to Harrington. He retired from the State Highway Department to take care of his aging mom.

He is survived by his cherished wife, Jan Rhenow, a beloved daughter, Belinda Smith and her husband Hal along with 22 grandchildren, one sister, Clara in NH, and 4 step-children that he loved as his own, 5 step-grandchildren and 1 step-great granddaughter. He was predeceased by a wonderful step-son, Kendrick Randall and survived by Kendrick's wife, Judy.

John's faith has always been important to him and though his journey in this world has ended, his spirit will live on in the lives of all those he touched with his gentleness and humor. The "Old Fool's Club" will never be the same yet we will smile when we meet remembering his wit. The family is thankful for all the prayers and support that gave strength to them these past few months.

A celebration of his life will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 79 years, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17 with a time of sharing to follow at the Col. Falls Municipal Bldg. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to either Faith UMC, P.O. Box 186, Columbia, ME 04623 or Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, ME 04622
