Harland's Story

ELLSWORTH - Harland L. Dunham, 89, passed away on November 19,2014 at an Ellsworth Hospital. Harland was the son of Rodney and Violet Dunham.

After graduating from Bangor High School, He joined the Army and fought in WWII as a member of the 5th Armored Division. After returning from the war, he attended and graduated from Husson College. He continued his education at the University of Maine and graduated with a Bachelors' of Science Degree in Commercial Education in 1952. As a lifelong learner, Harland continued his education earning a Masters' in Education from the University of Maine in 1961. Subsequently he obtained certifications in Guidance, and School Administration allowing him to be a Guidance Counselor and School Principal respectively.

Harland began his teaching career at Patten Academy in 1952. As his career progressed, he taught Business Education in several Maine high schools before becoming Principal of George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine. He finished his career in Education as Guidance Counselor at Sumner Memorial High School in Sullivan, Maine. After retiring from Education, He worked for a number of years as a Rural Mail Carrier for the Postal Service.

Harland was a member of the Franklin St. United Methodist Church in Bucksport for 30 years. He was consulting on Church issues as recently as 5 days prior to his passing. Harland's other interests included spending time with family, 5th Armor Division Reunions, Telephone Company Pioneers functions, and continuing a family tradition as a Red Sox fan.

In addition to his parents, Harland was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Helen Dunham, as well as His sisters Marilyn Bradley and Charlene Hosler. Harland is survived by his Daughter Roanne and husband Robert, His son Alan and wife Mary, Granddaughters Amy and Husband Ian, Nicole and Husband David, and Grandson Marcus. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held at Franklin St United Methodist Church in Bucksport, Maine on Saturday November 29th, 2014 at 11 AM. A reception in the church basement will be held following the service. For those who wish to attend, Internment will be at Dean Hill Cemetery in Orrington, Maine following the reception. In lieu of flowers, Donations in Harland's name may be made to: Honor Flight Maine, 211 Westbrook St. South Thomaston, Maine 04858, Att: Terri Waters. Honor Flight of Maine pays for Maine War Veterans to go to Washington DC to visit the war memorials with fellow veterans all expenses paid. Harland had the pleasure of going this past summer and was grateful to have had the opportunity. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport.
