Dad was a very skilled and talented self-taught individual. After attending Allagash schools he began a life of many endeavors which included, tending horses at Ouellette farm for his uncle, then went on to work the log drive for the Irving lumber company. One of the few men that would run a boat in the big rapids on the St. John River. He and his father contracted work on the new build at Loring Air Force base in Limestone Me. Returned to Allagash to build sawmills, sawed lumber for Old Town Canoe CO. and built his home. Later years became a logging contractor which included operating many types of equipment until an accident forced early retirement.

Dad was known for many talents, skills and hobbies. Loved his annual trip to Hafey Lake and time spent at Big Fall Brook Lake with his father, John Kelly. Loved to play his mandolin, harmonica, fiddle and whatever instrument was handed to him. His favorite was sharing funny stories passed down generations about life in Allagash while enjoying food, campfire, and music with family and friends. Enjoyed wood carving (deer), building bob sleds for family, or a speed boat for high cold spring waters on the Saint John River. Enjoyed tying the secret flies (Kelly Bug) for family members to use fishing at Big Fall Brook Lake. Other interests were trapping, ice fishing, hosting hunters at his cabin on the Little Black River and attending music festivals.
