Gracia's Story

CUMBERLAND FORESIDE - Gracia Harkins Largay, 76, died April 15, 2015. She was born in Lewiston, May 20, 1938.

Gracia was a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and Case Western Reserve University. She spent the majority of her career as a public health nurse and administrator for the State of Maine Department of Health and Human Services. She was a caring and compassionate person who loved people and enjoyed working in public health. Gracia grew up in the Bangor area where she met her husband of 34 years, Larry. They made their home in Thomaston where they enjoyed all the splendors of the midcoast. Gracia loved to sing and was a member of Downeast Singers. After Larry's death, she moved to Cumberland Foreside where she continued to pursue her love of learning having enrolled in numerous and varied classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine, art classes and involvement with the Southern Maine Astronomy Club. Her passion for nature was evidenced by her love of astronomy, bird watching, hiking and beach combing. Travel also fed her love of learning and her adventurous spirit. She adored her daughter and grandchildren; time spent with them as well as family members and friends brought her great joy. Gracia lived life with grace and humility, tender forgiving heart and care for those in need.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Largay. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Largay Moore and her husband, Jeff of Poolesville, MD; her two grandchildren, Ella and Christian; her siblings and their spouses: Michael Harkins, Margaret Willette, Bernard Harkins and his wife Julie Everleth, Mary Alice Commeau, Kathleen Harkins and her husband Leyton Sewell, Leslie Harkins and Anthony Harkins and his wife Nancy; her 14 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham.
