- Grace I. Costello, age 91, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at the CRVNA Hospice House. She was born in Millinocket ME, daughter of the late Pierce and Margaret (McInnis) Costello. She attended schools in Millinocket, ME, graduating from Stearns High School in 1943. Then received her nursing degree from Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Following nursing school she joined the United States Army. For the next 22 years she served her country as a Registered Nurse stationed in Japan, Germany, Hawaii, and several other
bases in the United States. Grace saw active duty during the Korean War in a MASH unit. She retired as a LT. Colonel in 1971. She was a supporter of many charities as well as a supporter of Christ the King Parish. She enjoyed spending time outdoors - gardening, walking the dogs when she had them, and taking care of the yard summer and winter - reading and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by a sister; Joanne Mitchell of Ottumwa, IA, two nieces who lived with her, Mary Brown and Nancy Sorrentino of Penacook, and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters; Margaret Brown, Catherine Sharpe, Agnes Sorrentino, three brothers; Thomas, Paul and John Costello. Funeral services with military honors will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21st, 2016, at 11:30 a.m. at the NH State Veterans Cemetery Chapel in Boscawen. Since Grace was a big supporter of many charities, the family is requesting that in lieu of flowers you make a donation to your favorite charity in her honor. The Waters Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
