Gloria's Story

WEST ENFIELD - Gloria I. (Sutherland) McCloskey died peacefully on October 31, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Clair and Geraldine Sutherland, she was born on August 19, 1943 in Saco, Maine.

On June 25, 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, James Douglas McCloskey. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Gloria could always be found in the kitchen. In the summer, you could always find her in the garden. She loved to turn her hard work into tasty foods such as homemade pickles, boiled dinners, and spaghetti sauces. Well known for her pumpkin chip whoopie pies, date squares, and yeast rolls, Gloria was a nurturer. If you visited, you could count on a well-prepared meal and a fresh, hot cup of coffee. Gloria loved playing all kinds of games. Many grandchildren challenged her, but nobody could beat Grammie Ma. Gloria was a dedicated member of St. Leo the Great Parish in Howland. She devoted her time to church suppers, to the gift shop, and to overseeing the religious education program. She was a selfless, humble follower of Christ. Anyone who knew Gloria knew that her life revolved around her many friends and her extended family.

She is survived by her husband, James "Doug" McCloskey, and her four children: Patty Cloukey and Tim, Pam McGinn and Jeff, Jim McCloskey and Mary, and Laurie Lachance and Roch, two brothers, Clair Sutherland Jr. and Carole, John Sutherland and Lori, and sister-in-law Annabell Sutherland. Grammie Ma had ten grandchildren: T.J., Travis, and Justin Cloukey; Heidi Harris, Kylie Hanlon, and Molly McGinn; Casey Seeley and Joseph McCloskey; Rocky Lachance and Audrey Hallett. She made a special effort to have a relationship with each of her ten great-grandchildren. These lucky children include Kaelyn, Juliana, Layla, Blake, Jack, Lilly, Natalie, Oliver, Calie, and Ezekiel. Gloria was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Eugene Sutherland.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Leo's Catholic Church on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 2:30 PM. Interment will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Faith Formation for Children, St. Leo Catholic Church, 16 River Rd., Howland, ME 04448.
