- Gladys R. Long, wife of the late Clifford Long, died January 16, 2017, at the Caribou Rehab and Nursing Center. She died of complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Gladys was born in Bridgewater, ME, on July 18, 1932, the daughter of Roy and Annie (Holmes) Ryder. She lived her life in Mars Hill and Blaine. She graduated valedictorian for the class of 1950 at Aroostook Central Institute.
She was a member of the Mars Hill United Methodist Church, serving as a choir member and Communion Steward. She worked at Maine Public Service in Mars Hill and Presque Isle for forty years, retiring in 1990 as Purchasing Assistant.
She also spent many enjoyable years helping her husband, Clifford, call square dances locally, in Southern Maine, and the Maritime Provinces, providing harmony to his many songs.
Surviving are her sisters Sarah Jane Beals and Tamara Ruth Massengale, her brother A. Frederick Ryder and his wife, Vinh. She loved her nieces and nephews. They are: Patti, Keith, and Kelly Herrick, Stephanie Beals and her two children Jennifer Barnes and Tom Cushman, Brian and Shelley Beals and Carissa and Grant, Daniel and Tanya Ryder and Tami, Tom, and Tommy Miro. She will be remembered by many dear square dance friends. She loved her two kitties, MacKenzie and Cami.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford H. Long in 2000, her father, Roy Ryder, her mother, Annie Ryder and her sister in-law, Bettina Laing.
Graveside services will be conducted in the spring at Marshall Cemetery in Westfield.
