Gilda's Story

HOWLAND - Gilda St. Thomas Poulin, age 85 of Howland, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 13, 2015 at Penobscot Valley Hospital. The daughter of Levi and Annie St. Thomas, Gilda was born on July 29, 1930.

She lived in Howland most of her life where she raised her family of nine children with Lucien Poulin. Raising her children was her greatest source of pride. Her strength and resilience were beyond words. The Poulin house was a place of much activity with family and friends where all were welcome. There was little quiet but lots of fun shared in her home.

She proudly received her GED in 1977 at her son David's high school graduation ceremony.

Gilda, along with her husband, owned and operated Poulin's General Store for 15 years. Because of their Canadian heritage, the store was frequented by the Canadian lumberjacks working nearby. The store served as a "hangout" for Gilda's kids and their friends.

After operating the store for a number of years, Gilda took a job at Sylvania in Bangor from which she retired.

She attended St. Leo's Catholic Church and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Cummings Health Care Facility for several years. Her involvement at the facility made for a comfortable transition to her eventual move to Cummings Residential Care where she resided until her passing. Her familiarity with the staff and residents made for a family-like environment making her feel very much at home. The care she received was very loving and much appreciated by her and the family.

Gilda was predeceased by her children's father, Lucien Poulin; her sons, Michael, Norman and David; her grandchildren, Michael Poulin, son of David, Luke Thompson, son of Carmela; as well as her brothers, Clovie St. Thomas, Gilbert St. Thomas and Otis St. Thomas; her sisters, Mildred Carlow and Freda Lavertu McCloskey. She is survived by her children, Bernadette Andrus and her husband Clifford Andrus; Reginald Poulin and his partner Linda Beane; Janelle Gath and her husband Samuel Gath; Marita Nutter and her husband, Michael Nutter; Carmela Thompson and her husband, Lyndon Thompson; and "the baby" Juliet Guimond and her husband Terry Guimond; her grandchildren, Paula Andrus Webber, Denise Andrus Russo, Gina Andrus Rosania, Jessica and Joshua Gath, Adam and Reginald Poulin, Jeremie Nutter, Lee Thompson and Levi Guimond; and 12 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday St. Leo Catholic Church, with Rev. Bruce Siket presiding. Interment will be in St. Matthew Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at www.clayfuneralhome.com.
