- Gilbert Shaw, 95, passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Eagle Lake on August 26, 2016. He was born in Eagle Lake on June 27, 1921 the son of Landor and Edith (Saucier) Laferriere.
Gilbert served in the United States Navy during W.W.II from September 1942 to March 1946. He was a member of the American Legion in Eagle Lake and the Fort Kent VFW Lozier-O'Grady Post #9609.
Gilbert attended a trade school in watch making in Boston, MA that he later was known in the community for fixing watches and clocks often not charging for his services. In 1954, Gilbert married his wife of 49 years Winona Palmer. After living in Connecticut for 2 years, he returned to Eagle Lake where he began his career working in the mills for T.S. Pinkham. Gilbert eventually retired as foreman for GNP after 28 years of service at this company.
After retirement, Gilbert enjoyed watching sports, especially the Boston Red Sox, hockey, and football as well as baby sitting his grandchildren. He spent his time "puttering" around the house and was affectionately known as "Gis."
He is survived by his three daughters; Patty and husband Dennis Bouchard of Eagle Lake, Me. Carol and husband Jim McDougal of Orrington, Me. Sandy and husband Wally LeBlance of Gray, Me. One sister, Patricia Simon of FL. Five grandchildren; Sarah Mulcahy, Kelcey Desjardins, Nicole Bouchard, Abby Bouchard, Eric McDougal and three great-grandchildren; Alana, Collin, and Olivia.
In addition to his parents Gilbert was predeceased by his wife Winona (Palmer) Shaw in 2003, 4 brothers; Norman, Hubert, Gilman and Harold, 5 sisters; Mildred, Madeline, Bernice, Rhona, and Maxine. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Friends may call Sunday August 28, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday 9 to 10:15 am at the Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 am Monday August 29th at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Eagle Lake. Committal services with full military honors will follow in the parish cemetery.
