- Geraldine "Gerry" Bell, 88, died on January 27, 2017, at Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge in Augusta. Gerry was born in Houlton on May 27, 1928, and was the third child of Aubrey and Thelma (Stone) Grant. She graduated from Houlton High School in 1946.
Gerry married Leighton "Bud" Bell on April 18, 1948, and became a homemaker and mother of three children. While raising her three children, she worked at several part time jobs in Houlton and Caribou. Starting in 1964, Gerry and Bud owned and operated Bell's IGA in Patten. They sold the grocery store in 1983, and spent 27 years splitting their time between Patten and Houlton in the summer and Bradenton, Florida in the winter. Gerry loved her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, family member and friend. She enjoyed spending time organizing family dinners, barbecues, picnics, holiday celebrations, and birthdays, as well initiating lunches, golfing, bridge games and shopping outings. She and Bud moved to Granite Hill Estates in Hallowell in 2010, to be closer to their family. Gerry and Bud enjoyed community, dinners, social gatherings and the fitness program at Granite Hill. They enjoyed having family stop by for visits and frequently made trips to Houlton and Calais for holidays, birthdays and other family celebrations.
Her sister, Pauline Grant McKay and her brother, Aubrey Grant, Jr. predeceased her. She is survived by her husband, Bud; her three children and their families: Susan Bell; Richard Bell, his daughter, Marcie Bell-Boure, her husband, Andrew Boure and daughter, Kayla Gagner; his son, John Bell, his wife, Amanda Delmonaco-Bell and sons, Everett Hanson and Easton Bell; Edward Bell, his wife, Katherine, their daughter, Holly Bell, her husband, Bryan Ingram and their son, Aidan; their daughter, Sarah Bell Thomas, her husband, Michael Thomas and their daughter, Isabella; and their son, Sam Bell. Gerry's family would like to extend deep appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Michael Szela and his staff, the staff at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine, Granite Hill Estates and Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge, who cared for her with compassion and expertise.
