GEORGE's Story

SWANS ISLAND - George was in the arms of his family when he took his last sail on 10/13/2014. He was born November 9, 1927 on Swans Island to Lester and Helen Stanley.

He was a ship's captain, a home builder, a carpenter and one hell of a wood cutter! George was loved, respected and liked by all who knew him. A kind, generous, gentle giant of a man, he will be sorely missed. George served in the US Army at the end of WWII in the North Pacific.

He leaves behind his wife, Carolyn Dawson, a daughter, Belva and husband, Joe Staples, a son Lawrence "Sonny" Stanley and wife Lisa, one stepdaughter, Damon Crist; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Lenora Wheaton; special friends, Donnie and Bonnie Staples. He was predeceased by his first love and wife, Althea Orcutt, son Mark Stanley and brothers, Hugh and Ralph.

Committal Services will be at Rose Hill Cemetery on Swans Island at 12 noon on Saturday, October 18th with a luncheon to follow at Swans Island School where everyone is welcome to join the family. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
