SOUTHWEST HARBOR - George Robert "Bob" Sinnett of Southwest Harbor, Maine, died unexpectedly on April 23 in Deltona, Florida. Bob was born January 13, 1938, to George and Marguerite Sinnett, and raised in Lexington, Massachusetts.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 23 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in 1982. Bob loved his years in the Coast Guard and enjoyed traveling across the country and back as he served in posts from Ketchikan, Alaska, to Southwest Harbor. A skilled craftsman, he enjoyed a second career as a wooden boat builder and bicycle mechanic.
Bob loved talking with old friends and meeting new people. A quick trip to the post office might turn into an hour's journey, depending on whom he ran into. Discussions ranged from current events to an interesting article or book he had read, and more recently, to the latest movie he and his wife Jan had seen. He was a serial hobbyist, passionately pursuing interests, from fishing and photography to the banjo and bicycle racing. He was a devoted grandfather who loved taking his grandchildren hiking, biking, and boating in Acadia National Park. A lifelong sailor, he and wife Jan spent several happy winters cruising down the Intracoastal Waterway. More recently, they wintered in Sebastian, Florida, where Bob was always ready to lend his neighbors a hand.
He leaves his wife Janice (Jordan) Sinnett; his son Christian Sinnett and wife Deborah of Albany, Oregon; his daughter Gretchen Sinnett and husband Joe McMaster of Melrose, Massachusetts; his stepson Kenneth Christian and wife Randi Kirshbaum of Scarborough, Maine; his grandchildren Zachary and James Sinnett, Iain McMaster, and Max, Edie and Joey Christian; his sister Marguerite Sinnett of Morgan Hill, California; and his niece Leslie Wood and her family of Los Gatos, California. He was predeceased in 1996 by his first wife Sandra (Mugridge) Sinnett.
A memorial service will be held July 16, at 10:00 am, at the Church of our Father in Hulls Cove. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Friends of Acadia, P.O. Box 45, Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
