George's Story

HOWLAND - Mr. George "Sonny" Harris of Howland, Maine died peacefully on 04/11/2016 in Brewer at the age of 86.

George was born on 04/24/1929 in Howland, Maine to George and Daisy Harris. He grew up on Verona Island, joined the Navy, and in 1953, married Shirley. After living in Connecticut for a many years, George moved his family back to Howland where they completed their lives together.

George was a hard worker and avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish and always looked forward to picking fiddleheads on the banks of the Piscataquis River. He was a devoted husband and family man, and will be greatly missed.

George is survived by his daughter and son in law, Jonnie and Peter Hallett of Howland, and his grandson, USCG 2nd Class Peter Hallett of North Carolina.

He is also survived by his sisters, Joan and her husband Ken Noland of North Carolina, Georgean "Jonnie" Harris of New Hampshire, Gere and her Husband Caryl Lane of New Hampshire, brothers David and his wife, Nancy Harris of Verona Island and Florida, Harry "Bucky" Harris of Washington, sister in laws Nancy Harris of Howland, Loretta and her husband Cecil Eastman of Belfast, and Margaret Shadie of Tennessee.

His family also graced him many cousins, nieces and nephews who he adored.

George is preceded in death by His wife, Shirley, brothers Clayton and Clarence, his step mother, Isabelle "Pat" Burroughs, and his parents, George and Daisy.

A private ceremony celebrating his and Shirley's life is planned for the summer. The family would like to thank the staff at Brewer Center for Health & Rehabilitation for the great care they gave George during his stay.
