- George Gaddis died at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Sunday, May 21, 2017. He was 68.
George was born on December 15, 1948, in Machias, Maine, the fourth child of J. Francis and Nell (Hanscom) Gaddis. He was a graduate of Washington Academy and the Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. He was an East Machias selectman for nearly 20 years, and a member of Warren Lodge in East Machias, Washington County Shrine Club and Anah Shrine. George was a longtime member of the 32 Special Club, and a member of the East Machias Congregational Church, serving as treasurer for several years.
He owned and operated the G and H Garage with his cousin, Harold Tuell, for many years. He carried on a six-generation family tradition in owning and operating Gaddis Brothers Company with his brother, John. George was an avid hunter and snowmobiler. He also took many moose-hunting trips to Newfoundland with Chet Hawkins and friends. "George always considered the Hawkins family as a second family."
George is survived by his wife, MaryBeth (Bagley) Gaddis, and his daughter Gillian; one brother, John Gaddis; two sisters, Ruth Leubecker and Margaret Gardner, brother-in-law Dick Gardner, all of East Machias; sister-in-law and husband Ruth and Joe Simokaitis of Falmouth; many nieces and nephews; several cousins and countless friends. He is also survived by his loving dog Maddie.
