Carrabassett Valley - George Richard 'Dick' Fountain, 98, of Carrabassett Valley, died peacefully Saturday morning, Nov. 5, 2016, surrounded by his family and caregivers. He was born in Springfield, MA, Jan. 30, 1918. On June 5, 1948, he married Mary Lapierre. She died Nov. 12, 2007.
Dick was the oldest veteran residing in Carrabassett Valley, having served in both the United States Navy and Army. He spent most of his life devoted to his family and running the family business, the Lumberjack Lodge at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley. He will be remembered for his love of family, sense of humor, passion for the outdoors, flying, skiing, and overall zest for life. Dick was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his daughters, Suzanne Fountain and partner, Robert Jung of Boston, MA, Deborah Kimsey and husband, Scott of Carlsbad, CA; sons, David of Paddockwood, Saskatchewan and Gary of Southwest Harbor, ME; and two grandchildren, Nicholas and Clark Fountain.
A Celebration of his Life will be held in West Brookfield, MA on Dec. 3, 2016. The family suggests that those who desire condsider memorial gifts in Dick's memory to the Stratton/Eustis Lions Club Project for Canine Companions Independence Veterans Initiative, (LPCCI, c/o Sally Iverson, PO Box 37, Eustis, ME 04936.
