BANGOR - Gail C. Harlow "Toots," 76, of Bangor, and Worcester, Mass., passed away March 5, 2014, at a Bangor hospital. She was born August 2, 1937, in Marlborough, Mass., the daughter of Dr. Homer A. and Helen V. (McCabe) Smith.
Gail was a graduate of Classical High School, Worcester, Mass., in 1955. She graduated from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., in 1959 with a baccalaureate degree in Music Education and went on to teach music in the Westminster and Worcester Public Schools, as well as Fay School in Framingham, Mass. She completed her M.A.CAGS in Social Rehabilitation Counseling at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., and worked as a therapist at Tri-County Mental Health Services in Central Maine, Northeast Occupational Exchange and Behavioral Health Center in Bangor. Gail will be remembered for her love of music, and her service to the Catholic Church as head organist and choir director. Toots will also be remembered for her quick wit and generous spirit.
Surviving are her four children, Dr. Valerie A. Shinas of Worcester, Mass., and husband, Peter Shinas, Leonard C. Harlow of Bangor, Melissa A. McCloud and husband, Tim McCloud, of Carmel, and John Harlow of Boston; four grandchildren, Angelina M. Shinas, Christina L. Tai and husband, Wilson Tai, Stephanie K. Shinas, and Ian McCloud; and two great-great-grandsons, Eli and Noah Tai. She also leaves the father of her children, Dr. Leonard C. Harlow; and dear friend, Nancy Vester.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. March 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor, with a late service on April 22, at Blessed Sacrament in her hometown of Worcester, Mass.
