CARIBOU - Fred W. Martin, 87, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at his home in Caribou. Fred was born in Eagle Lake, the son of Joseph and Catherine Martin.
Fred served his country for twenty years in the U.S. Air Force. Among his many assignments, he was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean Conflict where he was a B-29 Superfortress crew chief. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1969. He then worked for another twenty years as an aircraft mechanic and inspector at Loring Air Force Base. Fred loved airplanes and earned a pilot's license. He also enjoyed spending time in the woods on the family farm in Eagle Lake.
Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Darlene (Weihe) Martin; his sister, Connie Adams of Millinocket; his children and their spouses, Dr. Daniel Martin and Beth Fagerson of Gorham, Fred C. and Diana Martin of Buxton, Katherine Martin-Stephens and Jamie Stephens of Woodland, David Martin of Caribou, and Therese Martin of Caribou; his grandchildren, Noel Martin, Rob Martin, Kristina Stephens, Kelly Martin, Olivia Martin, Sara Martin, Jesse and his wife, Alyssa Stephens, Kendra Stephens, Joseph Martin, Elise Gudde and Madeline Gudde; and a great-granddaughter, Claire Martin. He will also be missed by many close nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased as a toddler by his birth mother, Elise (Dube) Martin, by thirteen older siblings and two infant grandchildren.
Friends and family may call from10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2015, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street, Caribou. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12 p.m. at Parish of the Precious Blood Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Caribou. Interment will follow services at the Eagle Lake Catholic Cemetery.
