GARDINER - Frank C. Hillman, age 73, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at his home following a long illness with his loving family by his side. He was born in Monroe, ME on March 25, 1943 a son of the late George H. Hillman, Sr. and Dorothy F. (Seavey) Hillman.
Mr. Hillman had been employed at the Bangor and Augusta Mental Health Institutes for over 20 years. After his retirement from the State, he became an organizer for the AFL-CIO for several years and later became a Gardiner Merchant, operating Hillman's Bargain Outlet.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where he served as Trustee and Board Member and received numerous awards for outstanding service to the Aerie. He also served many years on the City of Gardiner Board of Appeals.
Frank enjoyed summers at the family camp on Ward Pond, hosting many memorable gatherings, which held a special place in his heart. Frank also enjoyed his trips to Ireland, stopping at all the pubs along the way.
Mr. Hillman was pre-deceased by two granddaughters: Kayla and Natasha Tardiff.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Valerie E. (Thomas) Hillman of Gardiner; a son, Thomas C. Hillman and his wife Lisa of Gardiner; a daughter, Tamara R. Hillman-Tardiff and her husband Ken of Manchester; three brothers: George H. Hillman, Jr. of Masontown, PA, Donald Hillman of Milford and Gerald W. Hillman of North Chelmsford, MA; a sister, Ann Jones of Bangor; two grandchildren: Emilie and Jessica Hillman and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Following cremation, a gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, May 29th from 2-4 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
