SANGERVILLE - Frank A. Clifford, 93, passed away June 9, 2014 after a brief illness. Frank was born March 7 1921, the youngest of five children of Annie and Lincoln Clifford on a farm in Sangerville.
He graduated from Sangerville High School in 1939. He put himself through the University of Maine Orono and graduated in 1943. Frank enlisted in the Navy in 1945, graduated from Officer Candidate School with a commission as Ensign, spending time at Moffett Field in California doing wind tunnel research. After his naval career he spent 34 years with General Electric during which he traveled extensively in the US and abroad.
Frank fell in love with Loretta Doyon and they married March 29 1948. They raised two daughters, Margaret and Nancy. Loretta died in March 1993.
Frank enjoyed many passions in life. He loved his family, fishing, hunting, golf, boating, and woodworking. He loved the state of Maine - after his life of travel, he and Loretta finally returned to Maine in 1992, and at the end of his life Frank lived less than a mile from the Sangerville farm where he was born. Frank was a 75-year member of the South Sangerville Grange. He worked to establish a scholarship program for graduates of Sangerville High. Frank's passion for giving back was fulfilled when he joined the Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis and he worked tirelessly on their charitable activities until his death.
Frank is survived by daughters, Margaret (Jack Kaylor) and Nancy, nieces, Susan Clifford, niece, Ann Clifford, and nephew, Peter Clifford. He leaves many loving and wonderful friends including Ted and Shirley Bryant of Dexter. He also leaves many loving relatives including brother-in-law, Douglas Doyon of Dexter.
According to Frank's wishes, there will be no funeral. Instead, his daughters will host a celebration of his life in September, date and location to be announced. Donations in Frank's memory may be made to Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis, 74 Grove Street, Dexter ME 04930, care of Denise Dinsmore.
