- Florence Grace Stearns, 92, passed away August 3, 2017, at her seaside home surrounded by her family and friends. Born in New York City on October 29, 1924 she began working at an early age first on Wall Street, then modeling for a number of agencies.
Through friends Florence met and married the love of her life, Paul Adams Stearns, after WWII. They settled in Castine and had three sons whom she fiercely loved, while Paul was establishing the steam lab and instructing at Maine Maritime Academy. Then they moved many times for his job, but always considered Castine their home. The family has lived there year round since 1985.
Florence was predeceased by her husband in 2004. She is survived by sons Paul Jr. who lived with her, Waring and wife Claire of Portland, and Randy and wife Diana of Castine, grandsons Corey and Sam of Bucksport, two step-granddaughters, Sara and Emily, and two step-great grandchildren Tatum and Jayden. Special thanks to friends and caregivers Raeann, Tracy, and Carolyn.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Castine Cemetery at 4 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home. Those planning an expression of sympathy might consider SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605, or At Home Downeast, P.O. Box 1107, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Look for a hurricane Florence in the years to come. She was a force of Nature; iron-willed and resolute, yet loving and compassionate. We will all miss her and love her forever, especially her boys.
