Fernand's Story

Grand Isle - Fernand B. Martin, Sr., 92, passed away at his home on October 15, 2016. He was born in St. David on March 16, 1924, son of the late Gilbert and Rose (Ouellette) Martin.
Fernand was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a devoted family man, who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He worked at Fraser Paper for thirty-seven years until his retirement in 1986. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Rina (Cote) Martin of Grand Isle; seven children, Diane Descoteaux and her husband Jules of Ontario, Arlene Ouellette and her husband Jim of Florida, Fernand Daniel Martin, Jr. and his wife Eileen Chasse of Quebec, Jackie Labbe of Van Buren, Gene Martin and his wife Sandra of Madawaska, Raymond Martin and his wife Lisa of St. David, Gail Brier and her husband Manny of New Hampshire; fourteen grandchildren, Stacey, Jason, Joy, Natalie, Justin, Amber, Shannon, Aubrey, Elise, Jesse, Lindsey, Kara, Jonathan, Hailey; fifteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fernande Dube of Madawaska, Claire Pelletier of Connecticut; three brothers, Gerard Martin of Connecticut, Armand Martin of Madawaska, Norman Martin of St. David; many nieces and nephews.
Following the death of Rina's parents at a very early age, Fernand and Rina reared Rina's youngest brothers, Martin and Harold Cote. Fernand was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa and Carmen; one brother, Richard. A Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at the St. Gerard Church with Pastor Herb Desjardins officiating. Family and friends may call at Lajoie Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, October 17. Interment will be held immediately at the St. Gerard Cemetery in Grand Isle.
