Evelyn Bertha Sawyer

Evelyn's Story

Text size

Amity - Evelyn Bertha Sawyer went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 12, 2016, after a brief illness. Bertha was surrounded by her loving family at the young age of 76. Bertha was the 5th child of 10, born to Beatrice (Morse) and Alec Theriault on March 12, 1940, in Wytopitlock.
Bertha spent her whole life taking care of her family and others. She worked as a CNA at Madigan Estates and did private home care for many years. She was a friend to all and "Nana Bertha" to many. Bertha was the first to invite new people to the neighborhood. Whether you were one mile or 15 miles away, you were her neighbor and she was there for you. She brought clothes to countless children when they needed them. She loved her flower gardens and picnics with her grandchildren. In her free time she was a skilled seamstress and loved art. She loved nothing more than going out on the boat fishing with her son, Roger, while visiting him in Florida. Bertha was kind and thoughtful, never hesitating to help someone she saw in need, whether she knew them or not.
She is survived by her three children, Deloris Hammond and her husband, Brent of Hodgdon, Christine Richardson and her husband, David of Dedham, Roger Gray and his wife, Melanie of Florida; 8 grandchildren, Heather Lamson and her husband, Dan, Nathan Leighton and his wife, Mallory, Ryan Leighton, Destine Beriau and her husband, Nathan, Eva McLaughlin and her husband, Joe, Tyler Putnam, Caroline Gill and Crystal London; 8 great grandchildren, Alyiah, Brody and Tyson McLaughlin, Aiden Lamson, Anderson and Ramsey Leighton, Abby London and Alec Griffith; her sister, Bonnie Theriault and significant other, Brent Bartlett of Orient; 2 brothers, Joseph Theriault and his wife, Maureen of Cary, Peter Theriault and his wife, Debbie of Danforth; countless nieces and nephews. Bertha was predeceased by her parents; along with six siblings, Marie MCQuarrie, Dorothy Knight, George, Joseph, Phyllis and Rose Theriault.
A celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 17th, 2016, at the Cary Baptist Church, Cary Plantation, where she has been a faithful member for over 20 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cary Baptist Church, care of Bowers Funeral Home, PO Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
