- Esther L. Shaw, 92, of Chelsea, passed away Thursday March 16, 2017 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta.
She was born in Bellevue, Ohio, February 10, 1925 the daughter of Carl and Louise (Oppermann) Zoschka. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1942, York High School in Ohio and was elected to the National Honor Society. She attended the University of Toledo and graduated from the University of Maine, Augusta with a Bachelors in Management. Esther served in the 100th and 101st Legislature, representing Chelsea, Farmingdale and Randolph. She was the first woman in Kennebec County to be elected to the legislature and served as House Chairperson of the Towns and Counties Committee. Her major legislation was the Revenue Sharing bill, which benefited municipalities throughout the state.
Mrs. Shaw was predeceased by her husband, Stanley F. Shaw in 1993 and a niece, Constance Maxell of Machias in 1990.
She is survived by her grand-nephew, John E. Maxell and his wife, Alison and their two daughters, Olivia and Delaney, of Lincoln, RI; brother-in-law, Joe Shaw; niece, Sandra Germana and her children, Holly and Troy, of Sylvania, Ohio and very special friends, John and Becky Lasselle.
In following Esther's wishes there will be no calling hours or services. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330 in memory of her dogs, which were very dear to her.
