WATERVILLE AND OAKLAND - Emile Poirier, 94, husband of Stella Marie (Roy) Poirier, passed away with family by his side on February 27, 2015, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center in Waterville. He was born September 4, 1920, in Winslow, son of Theophile and Mary (Gilbert) Poirier.
Emile was educated in Winslow schools, Bay Path College and Colby College. While in high school, he participated in many sports and was a member of the Basketball State Championships in 1937, 1938 and 1939. He went on to officiate basketball games at the high school level for several years. Emile served in the U S Army, Medical Detachment of the 121st Infantry, during World War II. Following his military service, he enrolled at Colby College while working part time at Diamond International as a cost accountant. After graduating from Colby College in 1948, he remained with Diamond International until retiring in 1985 as Division Controller of the Maine Woodland Division after 40 years of service. Emile was a lifetime member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Upon retirement, he and Stella moved to their home on Messalonskee Lake in Oakland, Maine, where they enjoyed many years of lakeside living together. In August of 2010, they moved to Park Residence in Waterville, where Stella still resides.
In addition to Stella, his wife of 69 years, Emile is survived by his daughters, Donna Hanson of Vassalboro and partner, Chuck Jankoski, and Rachel Lynch of Brewer and husband, Jim Lynch; four grandchildren, Christopher Hanson and wife, Gina Souza, of Wheat Ridge, CO, Jeffrey Hanson of Lakewood, CO, Brianna Lynch of Brewer, ME, and Jesse Lynch of Minneapolis, MN; one very special great-grandaughter, Kayla Shea Hanson and her mother, Peggy Hunt Hanson, of Freeport; as well as many nieces and nephews from near and afar. Emile was predeceased by his two brothers, Raymond and Leon Poirier; as well as his three sisters, Lorette Girard, Alice Bulger and Rita Poirier. The family of Emile would like to thank Dr. Edmund Ervin, the entire staff of Lakewood Continuing Care Center and Beacon Hospice for their exceptional care and loving concern.
A Mass of Christian Burial and Rite of Committal will be held in May. Services are under the care and direction of Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, ME.
