SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Elwell P. Farley, 84, died on December 20, 2014, at an Ellsworth hospital after battling pancreatic cancer. He was born September 30, 1930, in Bass Harbor, the son of Earle W. and Lyllis (Lunt) Farley.
Elwell served in the Army for two years in Germany during the Korean conflict. He attained the rank of Sergeant and captained a river boat on the Rhine River. He returned home to his wife, Merilyn (Morse) Farley; and son, Earle. Elwell and Merilyn celebrated 63 years of marriage in February of 2014. He owned and operated Farley's Carpets in Southwest Harbor, and before that worked for several carpenter shops, Hinkley Boat and Clarks Dairy. Elwell was an active member of (MDI) Lions, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, was president in 88-89 and Lion of the Year in 89-90. He was also a member of the American Legion and Masons.
Elwell is survived by his wife, Merilyn; his sons, Earle and wife, Rebecca, of Surry and Reginald and wife, Lydia, of Trenton; daughters, Khris and spouse, Grace, of Southwest Harbor, Betsy and husband, Donald Pratt, of China, Maine; four grandchildren, Paul Farley of Gorham, Robin and husband, Brian Campbell, of Chesapeake, VA, Daniel Sorrells and fiancee, Alina, of Augusta, Mike Sorrells and partner, Erin, of Vassalboro; two great- grandchildren, Asa Farley of Gorham and Athena Campbell of Chesapeake, VA; and brother, Thomas and family; and sisters, Edith, Eleanor, Marcia and Earlene and their families. Elwell was predeceased by his son, Daniel; brother, Albert, half brothers, Merton, Rudolph and Lionel, and half sister, Ariel. Elwell was a great husband and father, and many know of his hard working, generous nature.
A celebration of Elwell's life will be held during a service on March 14 at 1 p.m. in Manset at the Manset Union Church, with a spring burial at Mount Height Cemetery in Southwest Harbor.
