ROQUE BLUFFS - Elmere Louise "Rick" (Erickson) Sloan of Roque Bluffs, Maine, passed away May 29, 2015 at Ross Manor in Bangor, Maine, following a six-month illness.
Born July 21, 1932 in Munising, Michigan to Elmer and Hildur Erickson, Rick was graduated from Mather High School 1950. She attended Alma College in Michigan, where she majored in Spanish and minored in French, Education, and English. While at Alma, Rick was an honor student and held the offices of president, vice president, and corresponding secretary of Sigma Phi Sorority. She also was Intersorority Council President, treasurer of the Student Council, played on the girls' basketball team, was president of the Women's Athletic Association, and a member of the college band.
Rick met and married Robert "Bob" Sloan at Alma College on September 10, 1954. She taught in St. Louis, Michigan until Bob was graduated from Alma in 1957. The couple both taught in Howell, Michigan for a year, then resided in Montpelier, Vermont, where Bob taught for the next four years.
In 1962, Rick and Bob returned to Michigan, where Bob completed his graduate studies at Michigan State University. During that time, Rick taught at Olivet, then at Eaton Rapids. In 1965, the couple moved to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, where Bob taught history at Lethbridge University. In 1967, Bob and Rick moved to Gunnison, Colorado, where Bob taught at Western State College. In 1968, they moved to Roque Bluffs, Maine, where Bob taught history at University of Maine-Machias for 26 years. In Machias, Rick worked at Porter Memorial Library and the Sow's Ear Gift Shop, and played clarinet in the community band for over 20 years.
Rick was a very gentle soul, deeply loved by her close friends and family. She appreciated nature and all of the seasons, was quite active outdoors, and had many hobbies and talents. She was a gifted quilter and rug hooker, and some of her work is on display at the Maine State Museum in Augusta. Rick was an excellent tennis player, enjoyed cross-country skiing and, until recent years, she and Bob took long walks along the beach and in their neighborhood nearly every day. She delighted in feeding the birds and always looked for new ones when spring arrived. She was a cat-lover, a voracious reader, and she and Bob loved to travel.
Rick is survived by her loving husband, Bob, of Bangor, Maine; niece Kristine "Kris" Erickson of Traverse City, Michigan; nephew Hans (Sara) Erickson of Niskayuna, New York; and great-niece and great-nephew, Samantha and Christopher Erickson, of Niskayuna, New York; and several first cousins. In 2014, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Erickson, of Munising, Michigan. She also is survived by her and Bob's long-time dearest and closest friends, whom she considered to be family, Debra and Bill Eckart and family, and Donna and Andy Strachan of Machias, Maine.
