Elmer's Story

Oxford - Elmer Smallwood, 94, of Oxford, Maine, died October 1, 2016. Born in Patten, Maine, in 1922, he was a Navy veteran of WWII who served aboard the USS Yorktown. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono.
He worked for decades for Sears & Roebuck across the Northeast as a Sales Manager. His parents were Della (née Dechane) and Charles Smallwood. He was predeceased by his brother Firth Smallwood and his sisters Donna Simons and Doris Cahill, as well as an adult son, John Smallwood.
He is survived by his adult children, Patricia Wolfe, Mary Churchill, and Douglas Smallwood; his wife of 33 years, Gwendolyn Smallwood; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and the following nieces and nephews: Janice Beinema, Darrell Smallwood, Vicki Hopewell, John Cahill, Debbie Roderick, and Donna Tomley Simons. He was an avid outdoorsman and fly fisherman, and was still downhill skiing until his late 80s.
At his request, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scarborough Maine Veterans' Home (info@maineveteranshomes.org, 800-278-9494) or Compassus Hospice (compassushealthcare.com, 207-761-6967). The family would like to thank these two organizations for their excellent care.
