STANDISH - Ellen Hayes Hamilton, 67, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones after a long illness on Feb. 28, 2014. She was the second youngest of 10 children born to Leola and George Hayes of Sherman.
Ellen graduated from Sherman High School and earned her nursing degree in 1967 from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. In 1968, she married Will and settled in Standish to raise their family. Ellen loved her nursing career and was a skilled baker and gardener. Many people have enjoyed her gardens and plants from her collection are all over New England. She was a tireless worker, generous with her time and her multitude of skills. Ellen was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 128 Standish. She cherished her time with her family and friends, and was always thoughtful, sharing what she had with all that knew her. Whether her children and their friends, neighborhood kids, or her nieces and nephews, her home was always full of children.
Ellen was predeceased by her parents; sister, Rosalyn Carr; and brothers, Merle "Sonny" Pearl, and Albert Hayes. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Wilfred A. Hamilton Jr.; son, Wilfred A. Hamilton III and his wife, Jennifer Banner, of Portland; daughter, Angela Pierce Houghton and her husband, Andrew G. Houghton, of Standish; son, Stephen P. Hamilton and his wife, Ellen E. Greene, of Austin, Texas; her two grandsons of whom she was especially proud, Justin Banner and Curtis D. Pierce III; her sisters, Annabell Gallagher, and Georgie Wheaton; and her brothers, Richard, Roger, and Marvin Hayes.
A spring celebration of her life is planned. In lieu of flowers, Ellen requested donations to: Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation, Veterans No Boundaries Program, 8 Sundance Lane, Newry, ME 04261, maineadaptive.org.
