Elizabeth's Story

ELLSWORTH - Elizabeth Courtney, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 11 after a long illness. Elizabeth J (Owens) Courtney was born on October 28, 1923, in Mattoon, Illinois, the only child of Harry E. And Helen J. Owens. Elizabeth was a bright and enthusiastic student, excelling in math and earning a full scholarship to Illinois State University. She passed up that scholarship, however, when she snuck out of her dormitory to elope with Richard Courtney the day after her eighteenth birthday. It was a choice she never regretted and they were happily married for over 60 years. Richard and Elizabeth would move 64 times during his career in the Air Force, finally retiring to the oceanside village of Leucadia, CA, where they lived happily for over 30 years in Sea Bluffe. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling, especially to Maine, Northern California, and Illinois to visit family, and to Hawaii for vacations. She was an enthusiastic shopper, a skilled bridge player, and she loved a good martini.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband and by a daughter, Donna Kelly. She is survived by her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law Peter Black of Ellsworth, Maine; grandchildren Mike Kelly and his wife Darlene, Sean Kelly, Kathleen Kelly-Walsh and her husband Mike Walsh, Patricia Tolhurst, Amy Hart and her husband Brett, Jeffrey Black, Kate McCarthy and her partner Jared Simsay, Tessa Tosch and her husband Adam, Tommy Kelly, and great-grandchildren Cole, Logan, Taryn, Courtney, Leah, Will, Owen, and Daniel, and by Tom Kelly and his wife Jan.

Elizabeth will be interred alongside her husband in Oceanside, there will be no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Robert and Mary's Place, 50 Meadowview Lane, Ellsworth 04605, an adult day center that provided her with much care and comfort.
