Eleanor's Story

Belfast - Eleanor F. (Gibbs) DeGraff, 81, departed this earth in the presence of family on November 26, 2016. She was born in Brooks on June 17, 1935, and was a lifelong Belfast resident.
Eleanor was an Army Veteran and University of Maine at Orono graduate, devoting years of service as an educator for the Belfast area school district. Family and friends remained first and foremost in Eleanor's life. These connections never wavered. She treasured time spent with loved ones, attending birthday parties, enjoying camp life, social gatherings and was always a phone call away. Her thirst for knowledge never ceased. She had a lifelong passion for reading, working tirelessly in her gardens and doting on her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her mother, Elva Murphy; and brother, Merlin Gibbs. She is survived by her children, Andrea and Hunter Friend, Jane Harden, June Harden and Peter DeGraff; beloved grandchildren and significant others, Justin Melcher, Kelly Melcher and Huy Le, Alexander and Amber Wentworth, Taylor Wentworth and Brooke Henderson, Brendan Wentworth and Megan Leeman, Eli Cox, Mackenzie DeGraff and Ryan Lambert; great-grandson, Jude Melcher Le; treasured siblings, Donna Bradford and Sandra Smith; brother-in-law, Alton "Bud" Bradford; and many nieces and nephews. Eleanor also continued to maintain a special bond with all her grandchildren's parents, Bonnie Reed, Kenneth Cox, Robert Melcher and Douglas Wentworth.
A celebration honoring Eleanor's life will be held on Dec 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Waldo Town Community Center, 629 Waldo Station Road, Waldo. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post #43, 143 Church St., Belfast, ME 04915.
